The question comes up every week at booking time: "Which 4x4 do you recommend for my trip to Morocco?" And the honest answer is almost always the same: that's not the right question.

There is no single BEST 4x4 for the Moroccan desert. There is THE RIGHT 4x4 for YOUR trip. A Suzuki Jimny is perfect where a Ford Ranger Raptor would be overkill, and vice versa. Before looking at the models, you need to know what you're assessing. Four criteria make up 95% of the decision:

The dominant terrain: The deep sand of the Sahara doesn't call for the same qualities as a rocky track in the Anti-Atlas. A light vehicle floats over soft sand but can struggle on technical mountain sections. A heavy pickup will eat up stony tracks but will sink faster into the soft dunes. Defining where you'll mostly be driving immediately steers the choice.

Range and usable space: For a 7-day desert raid with 4 people, camping gear, and water cans, cargo volume and tank size become decisive. Conversely, for two travellers going light, a compact vehicle is more than enough.

The driver's experience level: Some 4x4s are more demanding to master. A Wrangler or a Ranger Raptor require a real off-road feel that not everyone has. A Prado is far more forgiving of a beginner's mistakes.

The comfort/capability ratio: Over 1,500 km of tracks and roads, suspension comfort makes the difference between a memorable trip and a back-punishing ordeal. Not all 4x4s are equal on this point, and it changes everything over the long haul.

For whom: 1 to 2 travellers, light travel, focus on the Atlas and narrow tracks, tight budget.

The Jimny is the smallest in our fleet, and that's also its greatest asset. At 1,200 kg, it floats over soft sand where heavy 4x4s sink. Its short wheelbase and small footprint let it get through Berber alleys, the narrow passages of the Anti-Atlas, and technical tracks where a large vehicle struggles.

Its limits: interior space is minimal. Forget 4 people with luggage for a 7-day raid — you'll be cramped. Its small tank limits range on long desert legs, and its short-travel suspension tires on extended paved roads.

Verdict: ideal for an Atlas-focused raid or for two adventurous travellers who prize agility over comfort. An excellent first 4x4 for anyone starting out in off-roading.

For whom: drivers who want the pure off-road experience, fans of image and extreme capability, intense short-duration raids.

The Wrangler needs no introduction. Some of the best off-road capabilities on the market, excellent approach angles, solid axles, a formidable 4LO mode in the dunes and technical sections. It's the 4x4 you choose for the image and for the pure feel of off-roading.

Its limits: high fuel consumption (the engine is hungry, especially in the sand), less flattering suspension comfort on long paved stretches, and modest cargo capacity compared to a pickup. With 4 people and luggage, you quickly run out of room.

Verdict: perfect for an intense 3-to-5-day raid where you're after the pure 4x4 experience. Less suited to a long-distance family trip with lots of gear.

For whom: a serious raid, 2 to 4 people with bulky gear, travellers who want a proven vehicle with no surprises.

The Hilux is the standard 4x4 of raid organisations in Morocco, and that's no accident. Legendary reliability (the mechanics can be repaired anywhere, even deep in the Sahara), a rear bed for loading jerrycans, recovery boards, and camping gear, excellent behaviour in the sand as well as on rocky tracks. It's the rugged Swiss Army knife.

Its limits: the interior is less premium than a Prado, and the suspension is firmer — a trade-off accepted for ruggedness and payload. For long road trips, you can tell it's not its favourite playground.

Verdict: the default choice when preparing a solid raid without wanting to overthink it. Our most versatile vehicle for the desert + Atlas combination. Ideal for a raid with camping and bivouac.

For whom: families, couples looking for comfort, long raids (7 days and up), all experience levels.

The Prado is the 4x4 we recommend when we don't yet know the exact profile of the customer, because it has practically no dealbreaker flaws. An exceptional balance between off-road capability (locking differentials, multi-terrain mode) and long-distance comfort. Soft suspension that soaks up the tracks without punishing passengers, a plush interior, effective air conditioning even at 40°C, generous space for 4 travellers with luggage.

Its limits: less playful than a Wrangler in extreme obstacle crossing. But we're talking about uses that 95% of travellers will never encounter.

Verdict: our default recommendation for a Marrakech → Sahara raid with family or a group of friends. The best comfort/capability ratio in the fleet, by far.

For whom: experienced drivers, fans of fast desert driving, travellers who want the most sporty experience available.

The Ranger Raptor is a case apart. Specific Fox Racing suspension, a dedicated Baja mode, a high-performance EcoBoost V6 — it's a pickup designed to drive fast over dunes and open tracks. The Dakar spirit made available for rental. In an erg like Chebbi or Chegaga, it's a revelation: it swallows the bumps at speeds that would put other 4x4s in trouble.

Its limits: its power and sporty suspension demand real mastery. This is not a vehicle for a first raid. It's also the most expensive in the fleet, and its consumption climbs fast under intensive use.

Verdict: for the customer who knows how to drive and wants the most exciting desert experience in our fleet. Best reserved for open dunes and wide tracks — not the technical passages of the narrow Atlas.
