A 4x4 inflated to 2.5 bar on soft sand bogs down within 20 metres. The same vehicle at 1.2 bar crosses an entire erg effortlessly. Tire pressure isn't a detail — it's THE variable that decides whether your off-road crossing succeeds or fails.

This guide covers everything you need to know: the manufacturer on-road pressures for our 5 fleet vehicles (Suzuki Jimny, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Ranger Raptor), the recommended off-road settings for each terrain type found in Morocco, the correct technique for deflating and reinflating, and the most costly mistakes we regularly see out on the trail.

Understanding the Basics: Contact Patch and Deformation

Before the numbers, two essential principles to grasp.

When you deflate a tire, its shape changes: it spreads out and the contact patch increases significantly (up to +50% between 2.5 bar and 1 bar). On soft sand, this widened surface distributes the vehicle's weight across a larger area, which stops it sinking and turns a tyre that digs in into one that glides over the surface. This is the fundamental principle of desert driving.

Conversely, on rocks and sharp stones, a properly inflated tire keeps its shape, resists impacts better and protects the carcass from sidewall cuts. A tire that's too deflated on this kind of terrain pinches against the rim with every impact — the leading cause of punctures in southern Morocco.

Two rules to memorise:

Rule 1: the softer the ground, the more you deflate. The harsher the ground, the more you inflate.

Rule 2 : at low pressure, maximum speed must be drastically reduced. Above 40–50 km/h (25–30 mph) with tires under 1.5 bar, the risk of the tire unseating (separating from the rim due to excessive deformation) becomes real.

These two rules govern absolutely everything that follows.

Manufacturer On-Road Pressures: Your Reference Point

Before heading onto the trail, your reference point is always the manufacturer pressure. This is the value validated by the maker for normal use, at partial load, on tarmac.

Critical reminder : these values come from the manufacturer plates and owner's manuals, but they vary by exact trim, rim size, and above all by the tires actually fitted. The true reference for your vehicle is always the label on the driver's door pillar. Every 4x4 in our fleet is supplied with this verified information in its handover manual.

All measurements are taken cold — that is, before driving or after at least 3 hours parked. The heat generated by driving raises the pressure by 0.2 to 0.3 bar; measuring warm throws the setting off completely.

Off-Road Pressures by Terrain Type

The values below are established field practices used by the international off-road community and confirmed by our own experience on Moroccan trails. They are not manufacturer recommendations — the driver's own sense of responsibility and knowledge prevails. Adapt them to the vehicle, the load and the conditions of the moment.

Soft Sand and Dunes: the Sahara's Signature Terrain

Recommended range: 1.0 to 1.3 bar (15–19 psi). In extreme cases of very soft sand on a light vehicle like the Jimny, dropping to 0.8–0.9 bar may be necessary over short stretches.

At these pressures, the contact patch nearly doubles. The tire no longer digs into the sand, it glides over the surface. That's the difference between crossing an erg smoothly and getting bogged down every 100 metres.

The strict trade-off: speed limited to 40–50 km/h (25–30 mph) maximum. Beyond that, the deformed tire combined with centrifugal force in bends can separate from the rim — this is unseating, which at best immobilises the vehicle and at worst causes serious damage. Wide lines are mandatory, gentle braking, progressive turns.

Stony Track and Hammada: Protecting the Carcass

Recommended range: 1.8 to 2.2 bar (26–32 psi) — close to on-road pressure, possibly slightly deflated to absorb shocks.

The logic reverses compared to sand. On sharp stones and jutting rocks, a tire that's too deflated pinches against the rim with every impact, causing sidewall cuts and pinch flats. This is the leading cause of punctures on the trails of southern Morocco.

On long stretches of graded but rough track — typical of the Hammada plateau before reaching Chegaga — dropping to 1.8 bar improves comfort and grip without major risk. But as soon as you enter a rocky section with jutting stones, inflate back to 2.0–2.2 bar without hesitation.

Field tip : if you're alternating between sand and rock every 5 km, the best strategy isn't to constantly deflate and reinflate — it's to stay at an intermediate pressure (1.5–1.6 bar) and adjust your speed.

Mud and Heavy Soil: Biting the Surface

Recommended range: 1.3 to 1.6 bar (19–23 psi) — deflate moderately to enlarge the contact patch, but less than for pure sand.

Unlike sand, in mud you want the tire lugs to grip the firm ground beneath the liquid mud. Too low a pressure "smooths out" the tire — it loses its ability to bite and spins. Too high a pressure reduces the contact patch and causes sliding. The balance: deflate just enough to widen the patch without compromising the lugs' ability to anchor.

Moroccan context : mud is rarer than sand or rock, but it's very much present in the High Atlas in spring (tracks waterlogged after rain) and in certain palm groves after an oued (riverbed) flood.

Snow and Icy Tracks: the Atlas Winter Case

Recommended range: 1.5 to 1.8 bar (22–26 psi) — moderate deflation to increase the contact surface.

Specific context: rare but real in the High Atlas between December and February (passes above 2,000 m). On packed snow, a wider, more deformable tire significantly improves traction without compromising safety. Don't deflate as much as on sand — hardened snow under the lugs can damage the tire if it's too soft.

Deflating and Reinflating: the Correct Technique

Knowing the values is useless without the method to apply them properly. Here's the proven procedure.

Always measure cold : Before driving or after at least 3 hours parked. The heat generated by driving raises the pressure by 0.2 to 0.3 bar — measuring mid-day throws everything off.

Use a reliable gauge : The gauges built into service-station compressors are often inaccurate (margin of error up to 0.3 bar). Investing in a dedicated digital gauge (£25–45) is the only way to get accurate values. The onboard gauge (TPMS) also gives a useful indication, but with a margin of error that can reach 0.2 bar — not enough for fine off-road adjustments.

Deflate BEFORE entering the trail : Never in the middle when you're already stuck. Allow 5–10 minutes stationary at the entrance to the sandy section to adjust all 4 tires.

Reinflate AS SOON AS you leave the trail. Driving at low pressure on tarmac causes rapid overheating of the sidewalls, premature wear within 100 km, and a risk of blowout beyond that. This point is non-negotiable — it's the second most common cause of tire damage on our vehicles returning from a raid.

The portable 12V compressor is therefore the essential tool for any self-supported raid. Every 4x4 in our fleet is supplied with an onboard 12V compressor included in the rental, calibrated to reinflate all 4 tires in around 15 minutes.

The "chalk test" to validate your pressure in real conditions: draw a chalk line across the full width of the tire, drive 20 metres, then check the wear on the chalk.

  1. If the wear is central = pressure too high (the tire only touches at the centre).
  2. If the wear is at the edges = pressure too low (the sides carry everything).
  3. Even wear across the full width = correct pressure for your load and vehicle.

The 5 Mistakes That Cost You Dearly

These are the mistakes we regularly see on 4x4s returning from a raid. They cost in tires, in downtime and sometimes in safety.

Driving at 60+ km/h (37+ mph) with desert-pressure tires : Unseating isn't a myth — it's a mechanical reality that happens every year on Moroccan trails. Low pressure = low speed, no exceptions.

Forgetting to reinflate when leaving the trail : Getting back onto the motorway after Mhamid with tires at 1.2 bar leads to irreversible sidewall overheating. The tire may look fine but its internal structure is compromised, with a risk of blowout in the next 100–200 km.

Over-deflating on rock : The opposite mistake. Dropping to 1.5 bar on a rocky section all but guarantees a sidewall cut during the day. On rock: 2.0 bar minimum.

Not adjusting for load : Four people plus luggage don't call for the same pressure as a lone driver. The rear carries more and therefore tolerates — and often needs — 0.2 to 0.3 bar more. Most manufacturer plates in fact list the "partial load" and "full load" values side by side.

Relying on the TPMS for fine adjustments : The vehicle's built-in tire pressure monitoring system is perfect for detecting an abnormal drop (a slow puncture), but its absolute margin of error is too large to adjust to within 0.1 bar. An external gauge is essential for precise off-road settings.
